Journey

Kabuye Semboga is Uganda's beloved musician whose deep voice and captivating stories have defined his enduring career. Raised in Buloba and educated as a child, he was exposed to music through his participation in choirs and local bands. This initial love of song led him to an eventual professional career that would come to captivate audiences across Uganda. It was in 1978 that Semboga's music career turned the corner when he joined Elly Wamala's iconic Mascots Band. Early on, he entertained crowds with cover versions of foreign tunes by Jim Reeves, Barry White, and Kenny Rogers. Performing sets at venues such as Antlas Inn in Bombo Road, he honed his skills, perfecting the art of live performance in a lively, competitive atmosphere. Although he began with other artists' songs, his natural ability quickly separated him from the crowd. After over a decade with the Mascots, the revolutionizing music landscape brought a change when the group was faced with equipment problems. Semboga's creativity led him to find co-jam sessions with other musicians, even a temporary period with fellow musician Dede Mazolo. Not only did it revitalize his creative soul, but it also paved the way for a breakthrough. Semboga's life has been defined by personal experiences and friendships. Throughout his career, he has led a modest life, and music and sincerity have been louder than any spotlight. In his mid-sixties, Kabuye Semboga is still a pillar of Ugandan music. His legendary songs like "Sheila," "Ebisaanyi," and "Onyamba Nga Mukama" are still shining examples of his deep emotional resonance and his enduring influence over both veterans and new generation artists alike. Not just is his legacy defined by the hits that he has produced over so many decades of a long career, but also by his unwavering commitment to true, heartfelt expression with each note that he utters.
